new recordings

Hey all. I've got some tunes up on the myspace, 3 originals of mine. The first two are from a quick session we did on campus we really only had enough time to get one take of each tune. The third is from an ipod recording of a gig my school combo did this past semester.

Anyways, feedback on the compositions or bass playing, or band in general is good.
Thanks guys

edit: i just realized that it's harder to hear bass and piano while the horns are playing on myspace than through my itunes, or the cd. Don't know if thats due to their rates, or what?

Some nice stuff Clay. Nice grooves and melodies. You guys all sound really nice.

Be careful that your grooves do not loose energy when you come down in volume. I'm digging Consumption, it just seemed to lose a little forward momentum when you quiet down during the piano solo. I also heard a few spots where your bass line, which is nice, was meandering a bit. I mentioned this in Kevin's thread but I really try hard to make every note have a purpose. If I can't justify the note I just don't play.

The head on Joe's Blues is hip. I like it. Your walking groove has nice drive to it. Don't be afraid to get away from the root harmony. Also thing of the overall shape of the entire tune. I found myself spacing out a bit when listening to it. The melody really caught my ear but my mind started wandering during the solos. Harmonic and rhythmic experimentation can really add some shape to the solos. Start with something simple like a halftime feel or a broken walking line. Then when you hit it full stride it is that much more powerful.

Nashira was cool. I haven't had a chance to give it an in-depth listen though.

Overall really nice.
