A question on 2 feel versus Broken time, 2 feel implies that we're playing 1 and 3 with more space to imply a halved time. What is the difference between these two terms, since they both imply that we leave space to imply a more open time signature. The only difference is that we do not stick to the idea of playing on merely 1 and 3 (occassionally 3 and 4). In my mind, I can't really define what I'm playing in the first two choruses as either a 2 feel or a broken time. I'm merely trying to create a conversation with more space (which may or may not be successful )
Recently, and more often in the trio that I work often with (in which everyone feels comfortable enough to experiment with certain aspects of the music), I've been trying to stay away from merely playing 1 and 3 and trying to create underlying rhythms in the early stages of the soloist's development. Just trying to develop something.

Ok, so we'll call it a loose 2 feel, because I don't necessarily say a 2 feel has to be all about the 1 and 3 only. Ron Carter and Tony Williams are what I think of when I think of a loose 2 feel......
The broken walk is where to me it seems like you are actually where a 2 feel might make sense with what the drummer is doing. When neither of you is "home" it doesn't really sound like anything other than you aren't listening to each other.
By that I DON'T mean to say you aren't....**** Ed is much more articulate than I am on this subject. Years ago during the first incantation of the TalkBass Sampler we would all send each other stuff to critique. Ed listened to mine and immediately grasped that I was frustrated with the direction/ tempo/ feel and was trying to impose my will on the song rather than letting it happen via listening. He was exactly right and it stuck with me.
When you say you are consciously trying to avoid 1 and 3 it strikes me as trying to be hip for hips sake.....something I think we all do occasionally, especially when playing with really good musicians. If what the other cats are dictating are 4 quarters to the bar or 1 and 3 don't try to make it something it is not.
All of course is just my humble opinion. By the way, I don't get that feeling at all on Conception, which seems much more organic when rhythmic things happen.
At any rate, you are really getting your **** together and it shows, so keep it up!
