Ovidiu Badila

Ovidiu Badila is one of the best bass players to ever live, ever.

However, I am told he did not travel or record much, and died at a young age, so not many people know about him.

If you aren't hip to his playing, someone very generously posted a video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKeBqfQMKgY

If you know of any available video or audio, please let me know!

Ovidiou is one of those Schubert type guys who did so much in his short life that we all wonder what amzing things he would have done had he lived longer. He was a household name in Romania and much loved amongst his fellow native romanian musicians. I know several Romanian fiddle players (some of whom knew Ovidiu personally) who were all shocked a few years back when he died. I had never heard of him till then but they quickly educated me and since then have been a big fan!

Thanks for the link.

Ovidiu Badila, born 1962 in Costanta, Romania and musical studies in Bucarest.
At a young age he received widespread recognition for his spectacular and virtuoso Solo performances.
His versatility has brought him to the stage not only in classical repertoire, but also as a protagonist of Modern Music, Jazz and Film.
Critical stance toward the regime of the time obliged him to emigrate to the West 1987.
Professor Badila plays a Giacomo Zanfi string bass.
Studies with Sergiu Celibidache and with bassists E. Ferraris, W. Guttler, F. Petracchi and J.M. Rollez.

Beside his activity as a soloist, Ovidiu Badila has taught at the Scuola di Alto Perfezionamento Musicale di Saluzzo (Torino) and since 1992 as Professor at the Hochschule fur Musik Trossingen in Germany, and Musik-Akademie der Stadt Basel in Switzerland.
Ovidiu Badila plays a string bass, made by Giacomo Zanfi 1809.
He has recorded for many musical labels.
It's historical the whole of his Bottesiniane compositions in which he has opened to the descendants the path to a correct reading of his repertory deliciously double-esque.
He died March 21st 2001 in Michaelstein Blankenburg/Harz), Germany.

Ovidiu was an incredible bass player technically who also played with a lot of soul. His younger brother, Decebel Badila is a fantastic player who works around Europe playing electric bass and double bass, mostly jazz.

Badila was a wonderful player. I am also a big fan of his duo partner Güttler. Check out these two works from the same Concert:
