"Right Now"

Does anyone else agree that "Right Now" is Mingus' best? I always come back to it more than the others. Not only Mingus but Dannie Richmond is just killing the whole time. One of my friends, pianist tried to say Dannie Richmond was just OK, I immediately made him sit through the entire 23'17 of "New Fables" while Dannie just killed it the whole time - his mind was changed.

The flexible concepts of time, rhythm and forms are unbelievable on "Right Now". Clifford Jordan is playing his a** off, as if he just might get knifed if he plays something he doesn't mean. The band can just turn on a dime.

You can get for under $1 if you have an emusic subscription:

Other favorites of mine are "Black Saint and the Sinner Lady", "Blues and Roots" "Money Jungle" and of course "Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus", still "Right Now" is the best.

"of course Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus" is right. One of my favorites.

"Right Now" I hadn't heard before. Didn't know the chronology. From the short clip I agree that Dannie is on the case (he usually is). But I miss Jaki's piano here. Pretty much from this point on I start to lose interest in the stuff Mingus did. Not that it's bad but it doesn't grab me like the European tour stuff, or even the Atlantic stuff, like Oh Yeah with Rahsaan or The Clown. In fact I think I'll go check that one right now. That Reincarnation of a Lovebird is ridiculous. The alto solo by "Shafi Hadi". Phew. I also really like the live Antibes with Bud Powell.

Oh, and I don't know if anyone knows about it but there's this other album, entitled Reincarnation of a Lovebird, with all these old timers: Roy Eldridge, Papa Jo, etc. The actual title cut is not great, sounds like bad charts almost, but the rest of the record is jawdropping.

Yeah, I have an LP of the old guys, it is called Newport Rebels or something, Roy Eldrige is a knock out on that one. The key to "Right Now" is them tearing up two tunes for 20 min +, I also like that it is with lesser knowns, how hard is it to be great with Jaki Byard and Dolphy on the gig?

I have not heard Mingus album I didn't like, I just like some more than others. I love "Mingus plays Piano".
