Scott LaFaro

Man, I just came across a recording called 'THE ARRIVAL OF VICTOR FELDMAN' and it had Scott LaFaro playing on it.

That whole album has some of the best bass playing I have ever heard - it blew me away man!

How can I learn to play crotchets like that ?! So accurate and perfect !

Bleeding limey, don't say "crotchets"!

Siriusly, us Amuricans get all confused trying to translate what "hemisemidemiquaver" is and by the time we get it worked out, the drummer has already packed up and been paid.

But emphatically, yes, THE ARRIVAL OF VICTOR FELDMAN is killin'. Scotty just about takes over that record. I would recommend that it's going to be easier to play with your own intent, confidence and alacrity by really working at musical fundamentals, both concept and physical approach. Rather than "trying to play like Scotty", because all you can EVER hope to be is somebody who sounds like they are copping Scotty.

Given that, Phil Palombi has a nice book of Scotty transcriptions, you should (of course) practice like a mother****er, ear train like a mother****er and play every single chance you get.

I hear what you're saying - I'm just in the middle of transcribing his line as we speak on the Miles tune Serpent's tooth. I like the other stuff he puts in on the 7th chords - awesome.

I hear ya man, Serpent's tooth has some of the best lines. How bout the "Bebop" at 400bpm!!?? It sounds like it's so on the verge of falling apart but isn't. I'm working on transcribing a lot of that album now...I've done some bill evans stuff with Scott...but I figure this album is more half Scott's playing and ideas, and half him studying the hell out of Ray Brown. Although solo wise, he transcribed Sonny Rollin's solos and Bird heads in thumb position...so ahhh...damn.....

Anyone played the Lafaro copy bass that kolstein has made?

I've played the copy, and the restored original, a few times.
