Solo bass stuff

Some folks seemed to enjoy a little clip I put in another thread, so I thought I'd put down a few more solo bass tracks for you guys. I always enjoy trying to find ways to make solo bass sound interesting. I recorded them all this morning except All the Things You Are, which is a few years old.

Autumn Leaves

S.K.J.
Bye Bye Blackbird
All The Things You Are

Let me know what you think.

Thanks!

you should call it,... "Autumn leaves Paris",... i loved the feeling it gave. i felt like a young girl in the city of Paris in the early 60's!!!
btw,.. i'm a guy. (go figure)

EDIT: okay, just finished the list and i have to say,... "All the Things You Are", takes the cake! (thanks for sharing)

Sounds great Michael! Let me know next time you're back in Seattle, it would be great to hang a bit.

Thanks Chris. I'll definitely let you know when I'm heading back up. I'll start thinking in fifths ahead of time in case I play your bass again!

Thumbs up

I heard the first go-round on that earlier thread, Michael.
Again, the double stops are great, ideas are great.....but I think your commitment to the time on all the clips is one of the strongest points in your solo work.
EDIT: Ray lives in S.K.J.

Thanks everyone. I find trying to make musically interesting solo bass pieces is a great way to find some of my deficiencies. If you have any problems with your sound, time, ideas, feel, or whatever, it becomes blatantly clear.

Also, playing solo pieces forces me to think a little more clearly about how to structure my music. With the normal "I'll walk behind everyone else and then take my one chorus" way of playing, I can get away with playing whatever. But playing solo I have to really think about where I am going and structure the piece to form a satisfying musical whole.

Thanks. As we all know, good time will get you more gigs than good double stops. Trying to get a good feel and have a good internal metronome is something I constantly strive for. Ray, for example, was a great soloist, but I don't think that's what got him his gigs either.

I recorded a few more tunes this morning while practicing.

solo bass

I'll Remember April (sans melody), Time After Time, and a little blues thing. Hope you like them.

edit: threw in a version of Invitation as well.

Spectacular playing. All three are really great. I particularly like the fact that there is some strong bebop roots coupled with more modern intervals and rhythms. All of it is so clear and the time is so strong. I can't leave out mentioning the double stops, beautiful!

Thanks, I come from a bebop background, and it's still my first love in jazz, but I love some of the more modern stuff and I've been working on trying to combine the different approaches in my playing without it sounding like I have a split personality.

Sounds pretty seamless to me. I don't hear any "trying"in there at all, just music.
