| Looks like this happened in Chicago? I'll keep a look out and send the information to the stores that take in used musical equipment.
One thing struck me:
"The terrible, terrible, terrible news is that the instruments were not insured. Our van is insured and our trailer is insured when attached to the van but the instruments inside were not. Musical Equipment Insurance is way too expensive to maintain and we have never been able to afford it."
I don't have nearly the amount of equipment, but I was able to get about $10,000 of coverage for well under $200 a year. I cannot stress this enough. If you are making money from playing music, you need to insure your equipment. Maybe not all of it, but you need to be able to recover some of your losses. Especially if you are touring. It costs me about $15 per month. Regardless of the cost, if you make money from playing music, it's tax deductible and necessary. If you drove a car for a living, you'd insure that. I know some trades people that insure their tools. It's their livelihood. Hopefully you never have to use the insurance, but please, please, get it.
This really, truly is a horrible story. So sorry that it happened in Chicago. We'll do what we can from this end to help try and locate the scum that did this.
