Arranging

Hello,

I am trying to take regular pop songs and give them a jazz chordal arrangement. Is there any info or hints that can aide me out?

Thanx

not sure if you mean arranging as in voicing chords for a big band type deal or just making basic jazz reharmonizations to simple pop tunes.

I cant help you much with the former (well the latter either for that matter). but for making jazz harmonizations a pop tunes a good tune to look at would be "Blues for Alice." Bird basically just took the target chord (IV, V, whatever) and worked backwards with ii-V progressions.

You can take this idea and use it on the pop tunes. Mix in a few tritone substitutions as well and the changes will be pretty different.

Always let the melody be your guide, then the bass note, then fill the other colors in.

I would suggest studying the complete works of Steely Dan.
