Bach Chorales, sheet music.

Hi,

if you are familiar with Bach's chorales can you direct me to a source where I can find the sheet music for the following chorales? I need to analyze them in preparation for a placement exam.

Chorale No. 21, Herzlich tut mich Verlangen.
Chorale No. 244, Jesu, Jesu du bist mein.
Chorale No. 261, Christ lag in Todesbanden.

Thanks!

Look for:
371 Harmonized Chorales and 69 Chorale Melodies with Figured Bass, edited by Albert Riemenschneider. They should all be in there. It's available from many sources, for example: Barnes and Noble. If those chorales are showing up on the placement exam, chances are you may need this book eventually for a class anyway.

If you want to hear recordings, "Herzlich tut mich Verlangen" is in the St. Matthew Passion. The melody is used several times with different lyrics (and harmonizations) throughout the piece. The melody is actually from "Mein Gmut ist verwirret" by Hans Leo Hassler.

"Christ lag in Todesbanden" can be heard in the cantata (No.4) of the same name. This chorale melody was based on "Christ ist Erstanden" by Martin Luther, which was in turn based on the Catholic Easter Sequence "Victimae Paschali Laudes".

I don't recognize "Jesu, Jesu du bist mein" sorry!

Good luck!

You will want to be careful to use the correct version, as there are a number of different harmonizations of Herzlich tut mich Verlangen (9 versions) and Christ lag in Todesbanden (4 versions). The numbers given to you appear to be the numbering from the Riemenschneider edition.

There is a page on one of the websites listed by Dr Rod that lists all the chorales by Riemenschneider number. You can check it out here: http://www.jsbchorales.net/riemen.html

Thanks for pointing out that website Doc!

Thanks again for the clarifications and awesome resources! I realized later that the exam will include material of the same difficulty, not necessarily the given chorales, those I assume were just examples of what can be on the exam. I'm ordering a Riemenschneider edition, and will analyze as much as I can. Thanks again for the input, highly appreciated!
