So, my question is, if there is a password, what is it, and what program would you recommend I use to open the files? Thanks for putting these up for us though, I'm sure once I get them open, I'll be very pleased. Seems like you put a lot of work into this.
Thanks! |

Thanks though. I'll listen to them and which I knew the chord changes |

Do you have any clear index, I'm on a mac and can't figure out how to know what's exactly in here. Also, who did the transcriptions? This is really cool.
Thanks for posting! |

For those of you who might be wondering what this is, it's bass line transcriptions (walking, latin, etc.) for over 400 different recordings of various jazz standards. There are multiple versions of some tunes, e.g.:
Caravan by Ray Brown (1975), Rufus Reid (1989), and Jesper Lundgaard (1992).
Each subdirectory contains an mp3 version of the original recording and several different file formats of the transcription, including Encore, Finale and midi format. The Finale files (file extension .FTM, "Finale Template"), can be opened and edited with the free program Finale Notepad 2008 (or a full version of Finale). Of course nearly any music notation program can open the midi files.
There are no viruses or adware in the .rar file archive (which can be extracted with winRAR, a free program). If you are getting adware, it's probably coming from the download web page. You can always run the free program "Adaware" after downloading to remove any adware programs. I used the www.zshare.net site for the downloads. The files are large and do take some time. It took about 10 minutes to download each file as they are about 100 MB each.
Obviously there are legality issues with the mp3s, but the transcriptions seem to be perfectly legal since they are done by the author(s?), and contain no lyrics or melodies.
Cheers,
Jeff
p.s. - here is an example of a page of a transcription of NHOP from All Blues, 1974, displayed in Finale 2006.

I used WinRAR.

I'm using Finale Notepad 2008 on a PC/Windows: http://www.finalemusic.com/notepad/
When I double-click on one of the files with a ".FTM" extension, Windows opens it with Finale Notepad. It does give a message about the file being created with an older version and that it will be updated, but then it opens it with no problem. I have been saving them as Finale's standard .mus format after opening them.
I don't know much about Macs, but perhaps try:
If you are trying to open the file by double-clicking on it, instead Start Finale Notepad 2008 and open the file from the "File --> Open" menu.
Try changing the file extension to lower case (.ftm instead of .FTM).
I doubt there are any cross-platform differences in Finale Notepad file formats...
If you want, pm me your email address and I can send you one of the .FTM files that has been converted to a .mus file for Finale 2006. Trying a .mus file would determine whether the problem is with Finale reading the .FTM file or something else.
I assume you can import the midi files into Finale Notepad, and playback the midi files? (On Windows, Windows Media Player will play midi files. On the Mac, I assume you would use Quicktime)
Hope that helps - it's worth figuring it out!
Cheers,
Jeff
