In Black and White

Well, it finally happenned. I own a piano. It was actually given to me by someone who was moving and wanted it to go to a good home. Nothing special, but totally functional. I have a friend who is a piano tuner who has made an initial pass at it and will be back in a month to see how it settled in. It's holding it's tune pretty well now.

I haven't had regular access to a piano in years and am pretty bad at it, but am really digging just sitting down finding voicings. The revolations are just jumping out at me. (a rootless major 7 chord is actual a minor 7 triad starting on the 3rd) In other words, a rootless F Maj 7 Chord is actually an A Minor triad! Wow! Cool. and a bunch of other stuff.

I'm working through some standards, playing chords with my left hand and scales, licks or melodies over them with my rights to hear the tension and harmony. It's awesome.

I've got the Lavine book and another excellent book by Seattle local Randy Halberstadt. And plan to just work thorugh them.

My piano playing is terrible and likely will never be good, but the value of working things out is going to be huge for me as a musician and bassist.

I know that everyone knows this already. Hell, I knew this already, but doing it is something else entirely.

Plus, it's nice that when I'm too tired to practice the bass, I'm can sit and "think" on the piano. Oh, and I can force some rehearsals at my place now instead of driving the bass around town. :-)

Just sharing.

Troy

Cool! I'm about to be in the same situation - a friend is getting rid of his piano and I'm having it moved to my house in a few days.

I'm really looking forward to doing things similar to what you mentioned above. I hope this will help me hear chord voicings and really internalize them better than I have by just playing the arpeggios on the bass. And ear training - I really want to be able to hear a chord and know what it is and what scale to play over it.

How difficult was it for you to be able to play chords plus the melody line? I haven't played piano since I was a kid and I'm just wondering how long it will take me to become comfortable with comping with one hand and soloing with the other.
