cello in relation to bass

ok, wasnt quite sure where to put this.

anyways. where does the cello low C sit in relation to the bass E?

that may not have made sense... but here is my goal. as a bass guitar player (yeah, i know), trying at replicate the cello, pitch wise. my C (if i were tuning down from low E) sounds an octave low, but i could just be stupid... or deaf... maybe someone can notate it on the staff for me? (wow, a guitarists who can read music?!)

so, did i come to the right place?

You are correct... my brother plays the cello, so I know a tiny little bit. The low "C" on your cello is the same as the third fret on the "A" string of a bass guitar. The first fret of a low "B" string on a bass is ONE octave lower than your low "C" on cello. I've thought about how it might sound to buy a short-scale bass, throw the lightest-gauge bass string on it and tune it like a cello... Might be interesting. Rock On!

Double Bass E is E1, Cello C is C2 (the first C you'll come upon when going up from that E)

I thought, since it is theory I may as well, gives me a chance to use the stuff I go to class for.

+1. The main thing to remember is that the bass sounds one octave lower than it is written. The C two ledger lines blew the staff for cello (the open C string ie the lowest note on cello) is the same note as the C on the second space for bass.

If you're planning on tuning it C2, G2, D3, A3 good luck finding the A3 string. The high-C3 that is typically the highest pitch DB string that is available is a sixth below the A3... If you want an instrument that sounds good when tuned like a cello, you might just want to get .... a cello. On the other hand you might try a piccolo bass which is tuned in fourths A1, D2, G2, C3.

Jim

[Afterthought - I was just reminded, by reading another thread, that Damon Smith plays a 7 string EUB, so maybe there is a DB/EUB A3 string out there somewhere...]
