Which is correct?

I have one book that tells me that:

a whole note with one stroke is played as two half notes,
a whole note with two strokes is played as four quarter notes,
a half note with one stroke is played as two quarter notes
etc. etc. etc.

But Im just now looking through another book that says one stroke means play as eighth notes
whole note with one stroke- eight eighth notes
half note with one strok- four eighth notes etc.

two strokes means play as 16th notes, three strokes means play as 32nd notes

which is correct?
