I just started music theory in HS and I'm already overwhelmed.

Oh man.

We started doing this "rhythmic possibilities" worksheet and I'm having a lot of trouble with it. It basically makes you read a line of notes and audiate the pattern. I'm having trouble with the syncopation and the triple meter stuff. Does anyone now a website or a way they can help me?

Sorry If this is a common question.

Greetings!

I would recommend getting a metronome if you don't already have one. If you can get one where you can have a different pitch for the "1"'s of a bar so much the better.

Set the metronome to subdivide the beat down to 8th (or even 16ths) and work on the rhythms. The "emphasis" on beat one will help get you back on if you lose your place.

Go slow, and you'll get them.

Hope this helps and best regards!

This is a good question. I have a similar problem where I can't sight read rhythm worth a damn, and I'm not sure how to learn it without examples.

There should be a program that will at least give examples of a rhythm to start you off. Then in the future you'll see a sequence and you'll think, "Yah, that rhythm is like this." Any ideas?

Subdivide and conquer.

This is what I did back in the day...after doing this, I automatically am always thinking in terms of 1/16th notes when I play, not really consciencly (sp?...always been bad at that.), but I always have my internal metronome

Start by breaking the bar up into as many subdivisions as you can, ie 1/16th notes or. So a 4/4 measure would be

1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a

Figure out how the beat falls into place, ie if it's straight 1/8th notes the notes would fall on 1, &, 2, &, 3, &, 4, &, etc. Say all 1/16th notes out loud (using a metronome) and clap or emphasize where the notes fall

1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a

So I am actually counting all the subdivisions out loud but only clapping on the bold things.

Then with a more complicated rhyth you get this:
1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a

make sense?

This kinda covers the idea od subdividing.

and always start slow and work up to tempo.

Since you have a computer, try using an online metronome.
