Yeah I really dig my cheap Yamaha BB fiver, I've heard the 1000 and 2000 series are super solid. THey make a good bass.

IMHO, no bass is going to deliver "the classic P-Bass sound" "better than Fender".

If that truly is your "must-have feature", the 5-string American Standard P-bass is your best bet.

Thanks for that. There does seem to be a growing consensus for Yamaha. I'm a little surprised. But then this is the Marco Mendoza bass...

Yes, it is surprising, but it is more surprising people don't usually liking Yamahas! they've always been outstanding basses, and this one in particular is just one of the best they've put out

I'd look into Musicman, Lakland, G&L, and Fender. Can't go wrong there.

Thanks, but Musicman is about as far from P territory as I am from sainthood - which is quite a bit. Measured in astronomical units.

I'd get a used Xotic XP-1T 5-string.

I've got a Fender P and a Stingray 5. If I boost the mids, Cut the highs and flip the selector switch forward I get a pretty decent P-ish tone

I had an American fender p v. I LOVED it. However, if it wasn't tuned BEADG with Ernie Balls, it either wouldn't stay in tune, or the B was floppy. I played in a modern hard rock band and needed a low C. As much as I loved the bass I couldn't figure out a way to make the 5th string work, and that was the one and only reason I traded it off. I miss it actually. Great, great bass. I would recommend a used German Warwick, if Warwicks float your boat.

I have a BB415 and whilst I love it, it doesn't quite deliver the P tone. It has a ceramic pickup whilst the 1025 and 2025 have Alnico pickups like a Fender, so they may sound more P-like!

I, myself, would get a Stingray 5 HH, but I'll have to join the consensus saying get the Fender American Standard P5.

It seems as though my first thought has been echoed throughout the thread already; Fender P5.

Maybe also consider a Schecter Diamond P5 or two, maybe three, and maybe a newly released active model also. And have money to spare.

I really don't know if the BB1025X does the "classic P thing" better but I will say that the B with the neck pickup soloed sounds better (to Herrick) than the B on my 5-string USA P Bass. However, the good comments about the 5-string P far outweigh the bad so maybe you should just go with the P.

Never played a Lull but I hear nothing but good things about his basses.

I guess Sadowsky makes a P/J 5er which would be an excellent choice.

I have an Aembic Epic and while I agree with a variety of sounds I don't seem to be able to get a nice P-sound out of it. Nor can I get a nice P-bass sound out of my main axes (G&L L2500).

That's why I have a Squier P/J 5er special (which originally had a pair of nasty J pickups...go figure) that has been modded with a NOS Fender P-5er pickup and a Dmarzio Ultra J at the bridge. It's one killer P-bass, but of course you can't just go buy one.

and oddly Fender doesn't make a P/J 5er.

Another vote for a used Sadowsky Metro PJ5. Just a wonderful tone from them.

I apologize for my post earlier (#35). After fully awakening and seeing it, I realize my suggestion is far below the standards and price point of the OP's wants.

It's the same as someone suggesting Sadowski when a thread looking for a good bass for under a grand is posted.

Lakland USA Glaub. You can probably get a NEW one for around $2800 with some negotiation.

Scroll down to the bottom here. There's a new one and a used one ($2000 though the pickups are modded, I think). That Sunburst with the East Indian Rosewood fretboard and Birdseye Maple dots is just dreamy. Once you go Lakland USA, it's hard to go back! The necks are just awesome.
