1966 Fender PrecIIs ???? what is it?

I've had this bass for 10 years, was given to me to pay off a debt. SN on neck makes it a 66, but I've never seen a decal like this. Although, if you search GC used inventory, fender precIIs pulls up in the shorthand bar. What's the story, I've never seen another and always assumed someone did a sloppy job with a decal?

How about more than just a headstock?

I know for a fact the body is not original, it was a pj body that I stripped off and stained plain jane for a while. I defretted it (BIG mistake if it winds up being worth anything) because I wanted a fretless. Last year I had a friend paint the body as he was painting his jeep with a bedliner, looks cool and didn't affect the tone as I was worried it would. It has round mother of pearl markers which makes it different as well.

I have a pic of the back of the headstock. The original tuning keys were obviously replaced.

I was told the pickguard was from the original, if you look closely, the third "hole" is ragged and not machined for the third knob.

Looks like a modified decal to me. That decal lettering isn't from 1966 either. It would be interesting to see if there was still a date stamp at the butt of the neck.
Then you say you have a non-original body, and a defretted neck. It's what we call a Frankenfender.

yep, there is a date stamp on the end of the neck, I don't have a photo of that, but if it means finding out the origin of this neck, I would be happy to break it down. It plays and sounds like a P but I'm not a Fender afficianado by any means.

I actually like what you did with the body.

As for the decal?
Isn't black with gold trim along with the big honkin' PRECISION a 70's thing? Also, the kerning on the font looks off (around the R-E-C).

Looks to me like someone put on a decal, but cut out and applied each letter separately... only to spell the word wrong... then they gave up. Awesome

Edit:^^^ beaten & yeah, that's what I thought they looked like.

Exactly what I thought, but from memory the neck serial looked genuine. I need to take the darn thing apart and post a SN/neck photo so I can quit worrying about taking the frets off.

BTW the bedliner finish was an idea I came up with because the bass wouldn't fit in the trunk of a Miata even with a gig bag. I had to carefully angle the neck in first, angle the body in, and there it lay, unprotected except by towels and jackets I would wrap around it.

That's both hilarious & awesome at the same time.

I appreciate everyone's input. I'm now convinced the neck decal is a forgery given what the SN revealed. I will take the neck off and post the SN later, who knows, maybe the neck IS real. If not, someone went to a heck of a lot of trouble to forge it.

It looks like the second I and the S were cut off of a 70's Precision decal then turned upside down to reverse the order of the letters.
