I had a Jazz bass copy by Cimar in the early 80's (I think it was made in the late 70s though). It was actually pretty decent, MIJ and it wasn't plywood. It was a natural finish bass I took apart to examine one day, and it was solid wood.
Sound wise, it's very decent, but the pups were pretty weak. I don't have it now, but from what I remember, it was more than capable and pretty sturdy, the sound was just a tad bit too muddy for me. So if you change the pups, you'll be good.
