1975 P-bass??? help
Just wanted to see if anyone had any insight as to what the hell is going on here. I picked this bass up about 12 years ago as a 1975 P. Honestly I didn't know a damn thing about p-basses at the time and I just took the shop's word for everything. I don't know why it took until now to check it out, but I'm trying to figure out exactly what I have here.
Most of the date stamps seem to have faded beyond recognition. One of the pots is definitely not original. I'm not sure if the one pictured is original though. The number on the neck plate is 704261 which seems to put it at 1976, but who knows where that neck plate actually came from.
Looks like a refin to me, but please correct me if you think that's not the case. At this point the paint is very soft and can be scraped off with my fingernail. It's also MUCH darker than what's under the pickguard and I can't imagine a factory finish fading quite like that. The natural finish underneath is glossy.
Anyway... here are some pics. I'd love to hear any ideas for putting a year to this thing.

Dunno about the authenticity, but it's sure sexy. Nice!
the pickup and bridge are obviously not stock, can't see the pickguard or headstock so can't comment on those.
the body appears to be original and the paint would seem to be original, the wear is really unusual but looks authentic, not like a fake relic.
Yeah, it didn't come with the original pickups and I added the badass bridge years ago. I have no clue where the original bridge is or if it was even original at all. It's an A width neck, so it seems like it could have been a custom order when it was originally purchased. Or possibly just some frankenstein bass. I'll post pictures of the neck tomorrow. I don't know why I didn't put pictures of it up here.
As for the wear, I beat the hell out of this thing for years on tour and it hasn't seen too much tlc. I was playing heavily and with a pick, so the finish was worn from my wrist and the pick itself. It seems to have worn relatively easily though. I have a few other vintage p's that don't have anywhere near this much wear.
Thanks for the input!
I understand that you wanna know exactly what you have, but, with the character it has, I wouldn't care. I just love a bass that has player wear. Since it's been a dozen years since you purchased it, that is if you don't mind us wonderin', what'd you give for it? Nice cream color, too.
Yup, those 70's Fenders yellowed like nobody's business...that right there is a butterscotch beauty!
Thanks everyone! Yeah, I love this thing but it's a tank! Definitely the heaviest bass I've ever had. It's got some serious mojo though. And I don't mind you asking the price... I paid $1150 for it back in 2001.
