1978 Jazz bass - what color is this?

I know this is a factory color, but I can't find a color chart from the time period. The 2012 color chart has something similar called "Midnight Wine", but that's not it. I've always called this color "translucent burgundy". But I'm curious - what color does Fender call it?

Any ideas??

It's the heavy poly finish Fender used in the late 70's. It's more red tinted than walnut, I'd say. Kind of a dark maroon color.

I had a 78 pbass in wine. That doesn't look like mine. Looks like a possible refinish, possibly. Walnut maybe?? Nice looking bass either way.

They did offer a transparent red finish in the late 70's early 80's time period. But you are right, it looks nothing like that finish.

I've seen several others exactly like it, so I very much doubt it's a refin.

Strange I can't find a late 70s Fender color chart.

I'll try flash photos later and see if that doesn't show up better. The color is similar to port wine.

This is the exact finish. The photo of the back of the bass is the best rendition of the actual color.

Verrry similar to this '78, too.

Identical finish to this Strat -

That looks like my 78'. Not a refinish. Well, it looks similar.

I think it is the same color. They've just aged differently. Also the pics taken with different lights make it look different. This definitely is an original fender color.

Check this color chart out. It looks like Bing Cherry Transparent

if its the same finish as kai's bass its called walnut. your pictures almost look like a cross between walnut and the trans red they did during the same era. dont know the official name for the trans red finish.

Its a cache thing. If a blocked link is in a computer's temporary folder from a prior direct view of the site, many times the PC will pull the image from the PC's local cache. That's why the OP sees it and not anybody else. When that happens, you can quote the post, copy the image address, and view it in a separate browser tab or window. After that, it will be in your local cache and likely show up in the original thread as well.

Now get back to work and stop goofing off on TB!

I was wondering about that.

Here's a '78 Strat. Same year, exact same color -
