2003 Modulus Quantum 5-string bass...Good deal?

Seller desires $1,800.00 (appears to be in good condition).

Spalted maple top, graphite neck, Bartolini soap bar pickups, NTMB 3 Band active EQ w/ pickup-blend knob, black hardware, and OHSC (original hard shell case).

I've heard good things about Modulus. Any thoughts regarding this?

I have two of the 6 string versions of this bass. The fretted one has the same electronics, but with coil taps on the pups. A great playing and great sounding bass and if you check the price of new ones, that's very reasonable!
New at Bass Central in the 3K range-used in mid 2K range. They're pretty reasonable. 1.8K seems the norm for those used via Ebay, etc.

I have a Q5 of a very similar vintage. it's a great bass! Killer B string and tons of tone possibilities. They used all sorts of pre amp pup combo's so it's a good idea to find out what is has.

I think it is a good deal. You don't see these offered for sale at prices lower than that.

Great deal! Modulus's are absolute beasts in the low end department. Great find there!

The Q5's you commonly see are the ones with dyed quilted tops, so you are getting one with a somewhat unique look as well as a case I'd say anthing under $2K is a good deal for this bass. I got mine for $2K with case (demo model) but the new prices on these have gone up to about $3100-3300.

They are awesome basses that simply do not go out of tune. I live in Wisconsin as well and the fluctuation of the seasons do not affect this neck one bit. All the jam band type bassists who use Modulus Q5 and Q6 basses can't be wrong, and those type of bands that favor these instruments cover a pretty wide spectrum of genres without switching instruments...

Thanks all for your responses!

Although GAS pains are growing, my co-keeper of the finances (my wife) is giving me one of those looks...you know the kind where you won't be enjoying the pleasures of marriage for quite some time to come. Sigh.

However, I'm doing my taxes in a week.

Honey?

Yeah for a Q5 w/ that top, $1800 is a pretty bangin' deal.

I've had I think 4-5 Q5's, let alone other Modulii over the years. They're serious axes. My next purchase will be another Q5. They were my main players for quite a long time.

As the owner of 2 Modulus basses (and a bass player about 90 miles south of you) I say don't buy it- tell me where it's at and I'll make it easy for you and buy it instead.

As long as it's in good shape, everything working, $1800 with a upgraded top and OHSC is a pretty good deal. And as has been said before, these are great basses. I paid $1800 for my 5 used on TB, and I'm very happy with it, and mine's a stained quilted maple top (as is standard for Q5's).
