I'm adaptable. It's mostly the general P tone and aesthetic I'm looking for, and these are the two basses that caught my eye. Shallow, I know

We're at risk of going off topic here, not to mention the flame risk when one expresses an unqualified opinion. Suffice it to say that many bassists place a high value on the build quality of instruments from Fender Japan. MIM is excellent these days too...but as there won't be any more of the MIJs made, there is the potential for their value to increase over time. So far, in this horrid economy, there's little evidence of that.

The MIA Honeybursts, if they turn to be a limited run, may appreciate in value too. There. Whew! Back on topic.

All IMHO of course and YMMV.

I just picked this beauty up last week. I think the black PG suits her best. I also installed a BAII bridge and a set of Dunlop strap locks.

I know a lot of folks don't dig the BA bridges, but I think it makes the bass look better.

I really like the black guard, thanks for posting the pic. It looks especially good with the stock all-maple neck.

Awhile back I put a tort guard on mine (see a previous post) but I recently changed it back to the original parchment one as there was too much going on with the wood grain on the body and the "striped" rosewood board neck I installed...the tort just didn't work for me and I'm not wild about the parchment one, either. So....I think I might try a black guard now.

I think a cream-colored guard would look great on those as well. Darker than the parchment, but would probably look great with the body color and the maple board. This isn't a Fender, but gives you a good idea of the color I'm talking about:

Hey, y'all.
Played one of these GC-exclusive honeyburst P-basses this weekend.
Loved loved loved it. Sounded good, unique look, soft feel all around (felt like holding a fuzzy blanket, so warm and comfortable...).
I am not even remotely able to buy a new bass right now, and I'm actually inheriting my dad's 70's P-bass in the near future.
A couple questions about the honeyburst American Special:

-I loved that it seemed quite light for a P-bass. Is this an ash vs. alder thing? I asked the salesperson at GC, and he said it was because it didn't have the glossy finish, but that sounds like a bunch of bunk to me. I mean, what does a glossy finish add to the weight, a few oz?

-My dad's 70s P-bass is of course super glossy all around. I was already planning on taking steel wool to the whole neck and fingerboard when I got it, but now I'm wondering if I should just strip the whole bass down and give it a satin finish. Is this doable? I would have a luthier friend help with the project. Don't really care about the bass holding its value as it's already not 100% stock and I'm going to PLAY it an love it, not sell it.

Stopped in my local GC a week ago or so. They had one there for $899.00, It was probably the 5th one they have had there since late last year. I asked when they would be marked down to $699.00 like they had been in the month of Jan, and also one time before that. The sales rep said that they were never that price, and that even at $$899 for an American P it was still a smoking deal. Wish they knew what the heck they were doing in that store....

If I could get one at $699.00 I got to believe I would grab it up. Should have when I had a chance..
Super basses!

Heaven help me, I was in GC tonight to buy a gift for the music director at church and saw the Honeyburst P. The manager offered a nice discount. So it is on layaway. Three piece body, light as a feather. Great neck, great tone. Now which bass am I gonna sell?

Looks pretty sweet. Still, the black is really nice. Luckily, I don't own the bass. Yet.
