20th Anniversary Stingray 5 Photos

Just a couple from a small gathering over the weekend:

Not only is it pretty, it's very powerful. There's apparently a mahogany tone block down the center, under the pickups, and the difference was easy to note.

Yours truly, fondling the poor beast. I played it solo for a while and then had a chance to play it with a drummer and guitarist and that is where it really came alive.

I know some of you guys love SR5s, so thought I'd share.

Jack

I was just going to post something on this beast -- Alnico pickups!!! Finally a 5 that sounds like a Ray instead of a Sterling? GAS!

Are they available in multiple finishes or is this like an LE?

I played three of the 20th Anniversary SR5s at NAMM and I have to say I loved all of them. They all had great, full B strings, and the tone was punchy and clear. They sounded more like an SR4 than any of the other SR5s I've played. The mahogany tone block obviously makes a difference.

I'm a big fan of the SR5 HH and that is one of the best looking ones I have ever seen.

Yeah, out of the three I played, the HH was my favorite. I really dig the tone of both pickups up full blast. It's very dark and punchy with the fingers, but if you pop the string it goes "gink" - just like you want.

Wow, look at me, I forgot it had alnico pickups. Doh!

I like the back-loaded electronics, too. It's definitely a Stingray 5, but different enough to make it an almost entirely different beast.

Glad you liked 'em, Ed.

My new dilemma is that I really want one of those with the alnico pickups (to sound more like a SR4), but I have a Dargie Delight on order, and I can't have both.

Danged GAS.

I hope the order window for these is a long time off and is open for a long time, as well, because I can't pull the trigger unless I sacrifice the DD.

I do think it looks odd without the pickguard, though. A little too much like a G&L.

The SR5 20th is really quite an amazing instrument. Absolutely beautiful in person.

It might look a bit like a G&L, but I choose to think that G&Ls simply look like SRs without a pickguard (in my effort to remember what came first).

Anecdotally, when G&Ls first hit the stores, I walked into a place in Houston and said, "Hey, that looks like my Stingray without a pickguard."

Bart, the order window is open right now, but it will also be open for a while. Maybe six months? Something like that. They just don't want to be delivering 20th Anniversary models long into what would be the 21st Anniversary. Seems fair.

I'm with you, though. I have my DD on order and really want one of these.....Tony Levin was talking these up real nice to Dudley Gimpel of MM fame....but I don't think I'll be able to swing both, either.

So let us now suffer together.

Jack

I'd love that Bass a whole lot more with a Maple fretboard.

It appears that it doesn't have the normal body contours of a Ray5?

Uh, what's Dargie's Delight? I've seen pics at BassCentral, but who's Dargie and why does he get his delight?

Oh, and that 20th Anniversary SR 5 is a great looking bass. It looks almost non-MusicMan-ish, though... are the contours different or do they just look that way in the photos?

And will you be able to get some soundclips up?

It looks awesome, but I sort of agree with the guard camp.

Maybe they should have put an oval guard on it.

Nice bass regardless.

Dargie's delight is a special run of martini green basses and guitars with martini glass inlays.

Will the 20th only come in that finish? Did you get a chance to play a single H version?
