I was looking around that vintageguitarandbass site and saw some interesting things including a bass that I have. There were also links to various basses on sale at e-bay. Here's one that I found hard to believe. It is a 1982 Rickenbacker 4002 and the guy wants 25,000 for it.

The prices on these may be inflated, but I would beat you up for some of them

Ugly if you ask me. Maybe the reason it was discontinued after so few were produced is that people didn't like it.

Wals are going for more than the last 3 or 4 on that list, seems like they're just obsessed with Fender and Gibson, and wanted to make a list as an excuse to keep fawning over them.

It isn't for me. If I had to spend 25K on basses I would get two Alembics, a couple of Precisions, and still have money left to shop around for a few others. I would definitely not spend 25K on that Rickenbacker.

people buy that stuff as an investment hoping it will go up in value. At that point the soul of the instrument is trapped in a glass prison on some collector's wall and it is only used for bragging rights and as a form of money.

I weep for the poor imprisoned beauties, never to sing again.

Those are probably basses that the writers/editors/friends of that magazine own and they are inflating their values. I would think that some basses owned by Paul McCartney or other iconic bass players would be more valueable.

I believe Robert Trujilio owns Jaco's bass if I am not mistaken. I think I read that, or somebody has it.

So how much do you think a 1960 Fender J in sunburst is worth? I was at my guitar shop yesterday and the shop owner was inspecting one with the original owner who was considering putting it on consignment. In your opinions, regardless of price, what model should top the list?

Maybe, but then again, some of those things are better seen and not heard. I'd hate to have to try to get through an actual gig with a real '62 jazz bass - when I was kid, there wasn't much choice. Eg. in 1979 it was either a pre-CBS Jazz or Precision (you could still find them for $1000 or a little more) or a new/used 70's model. My arms and wrists still ache and my ears ring just thinking about it.

I still keep my Rick 4003 as a kind of piece of art work. It's only a 2000 model and another bass I'd never want to try to actually play on a gig (BTDT back when I was gigging), but it's a gorgeous instrument. It's also appreciated slightly (I bought it new for about $900).

So even as collector's items, a lot of these basses are still iconic and worth having.

I think the only ''value'' that those basses have, are given by people who think that they are ''worth'' the price those basses have

Don't care for that list but how is that?

5 Fender
10 Gibson
4 Rickenbacker
4 Alembic

Guess what ? I think Gibson is very much over-represented !

...I would keep the jazz and the precision bass - and sell the rest.

I find it interesting that the title image does not show a single fender.
