There were also links to various basses on sale at e-bay. Here's one that I found hard to believe. It is a 1982 Rickenbacker 4002 and the guy wants 25,000 for it. |

Maybe the reason it was discontinued after so few were produced is that people didn't like it.

If I had to spend 25K on basses I would get two Alembics, a couple of Precisions, and still have money left to shop around for a few others. I would definitely not spend 25K on that Rickenbacker. |

I weep for the poor imprisoned beauties, never to sing again.

I would think that some basses owned by Paul McCartney or other iconic bass players would be more valueable.

I was at my guitar shop yesterday and the shop owner was inspecting one with the original owner who was considering putting it on consignment. In your opinions, regardless of price, what model should top the list? |

I weep for the poor imprisoned beauties, never to sing again. | Maybe, but then again, some of those things are better seen and not heard. I'd hate to have to try to get through an actual gig with a real '62 jazz bass - when I was kid, there wasn't much choice. Eg. in 1979 it was either a pre-CBS Jazz or Precision (you could still find them for $1000 or a little more) or a new/used 70's model. My arms and wrists still ache and my ears ring just thinking about it.
I still keep my Rick 4003 as a kind of piece of art work. It's only a 2000 model and another bass I'd never want to try to actually play on a gig (BTDT back when I was gigging), but it's a gorgeous instrument. It's also appreciated slightly (I bought it new for about $900).
So even as collector's items, a lot of these basses are still iconic and worth having.

Don't care for that list but how is that?
5 Fender
10 Gibson
4 Rickenbacker
4 Alembic
Guess what ? I think Gibson is very much over-represented ! |
