Its one of the best built and equipped basses you can buy. IMO spend your money where it counts, on the wood and construction ( 3 pc graphite reinforced maple neck, (solid quilt or flamed)Maple or maple / alder body wings, neck thru, emg electronics, emg or Spector preamp, schaller tuners /strap locks, solild brass bridge, brass nut). Tone for days and it will last you forever. Even the older 34" Spector 5's have a better B than most 35" basses out there. you can find the used for about $1k, they are worth the extra money though. not much else out there that compairs when you break it down. Amazing playing and sounding instruments. |

3 basses kept my attention: MTD Kingston Artist, Spector Legend Classic and Ibanez Sr 505. I'll take a look at them. Quote:

Tell me more about those Spector, I looked up on some and it seems an interesting bass ! How's the neck ? | the necks are the one thing that does change a bit. they are all hand sanded /finished so there is some variation. The newer basses have been a little thicker, the older ones thinner. On the older NSCR models ( solid maple wings, dot inlays, 34' scale 5 strings) they were all done by hand ( there were only about 11 people in the "shop" at the time, about 35 now) .
Mine was the best neck I have played on a 5, not thin, but fast and comfortable, never any hand fatigue. The newer basses with crown inlays ( the euro 5xl) are 35" scale though. the B on those is about like an E string, same with the newer legends.
all those basses are great, if bolt on is your thing the legend is in that range new, but i highly suggest you shop used. There are a lot of MINT basses out there for sale and you can go up a series or 2 or even 3 for your money. The legends are great but mass produced, quality is above average. Check out a rebop. Their a lot more bass than the legend and are in that range used. those are a hand finished bass (fully carved) from the czec republic. I have seen some US bolt on basses going for ridiculously cheap also (1100-1700) thats a top of the line USA hand made bolt on. sick basses.
look at one thing though, check the neck pockets on the basses your looking at. They should be extremely tight. The pocket on my rebop is so tight (and very deep for a bolt on) the neck will only fit in it from one angle. IMO things like that should be there on a quality bass before anything else, thats the kind of craftsmanship your looking for.
The kingston and Ibby are both excellent basses as well and I have never seen either with any slop. The Ibby wins for thin slim neck honors, their B is good, but not near the spector. Play a bunch and see what you like. |

good luck

I have fairly small hands so I would like a bass with a small and fast neck. I would like it to have good electronics and to be versatile.
I was looking at the Ibanez Sr 505 but don't know if the low B sounds good...
Any suggestion ? | Good advice so far, but pay more attention to string spacing besides your 35" preference, it's factors in more than you would think. Ibanez: 17mm. pretty tight. 18mm: might be more comfortable for slapping. FYI |

I really think scale is personal preference. I have not been able to tell the difference in sound, but only the tension of the string - and even that was really slight.
SBMM Ray35 - really nice basses, just really heavy
I had a Spector Rebop 5DLX, 35" scale, just a tad over 8lbs, great B string - but I just sold it. The Spector Legend Custom 5 is also a really nice bass if you can find one. They have the EMG preamp.
Ibanez has the sweet thin necks, but I prefer a little bit of heft - not too much. I have small hands, but long-ish fingers. I've tried the SBMM Ray35, Yamaha BB425, Warwick Corvette Standard Active 5, a Fender Jazz V, but my favorite in terms of sound/feel/weight is the Spector Rebop 5DLX. Yeah, I know, I sold it, but I'm getting another 5, the Spector Rebop 5MM...

I believe G&L's are 34" scale. |

I think the difference between a 34" & 35" are easy to overcome. Just my opinion.
The way the bass is laid out has a lot to do with it also. Somewhere here is a thread about a 36" or 38" scale Carl Thompson six string. Some of his designs put the bridge as far back as possible making the reach to fret one easier. To me (I'm small) that makes as much difference to me as fret spacing when it comes to 34" & 35" differences. |

I currently have it set up as EADGC but it really sounds smooth and has great build quality!
I also have a Schecter Studio 5 Elite and love that one too. Great sound and well built.

FWIW, all my 5's are 34" w/19mm spacing and I don't slap at all. But I can't play anything at all less than 18mm as my hand cramps....

I guess that IbanezīBTB-fivers are quite much on a same league with 3-band eq and so on, and the string-spacing isnīt really thick and the neck is thinner.
Iīve also had Schecter Hellraiser 5 but its string-spacing was a bit too narrow for me, but if you donīt need to do a lot of slapping, itīs a good option also.
