Anyone know of some other bass models that have a tight spacing also? I'd love a Stingray or a P-Bass or PJ combo. Maybe the answer is to add a 5 string?
Do you keep missing strings when pressing (with the left hand) or plucking (with the right hand)? If the former, I guess nut width is the major disturbing factor. Some P basses have a significantly wider nut (1.75") than that of a J bass (1.5"), and hence a wider neck. Some players actually prefer that way, but if that's not your piece of cake you may begin looking for a J bass.
Stingray 4's nut width is in between at 1.625". You may want to give it a try to determine whether it fits your hands before buying.
On the other hand, almost all four string basses have 19 mm string spacing. If you are looking at a tighter bridge, entering the 5 string world may be a good start, though that also brings you more muting troubles. Alternatively, a hipshot A style 4-string bridge can provide a spacing as narrow as 17.5 mm, IIRC.
