My experience with Squier has been very satisfying. Hard to touch quality and features for the money.

I really hate to let this one go, but I "WILL" buy another when the funds are available after income tax season.

Any type 5er with a good B will work. Active is good, passive has worked fine for me. A J/J or P/J is great because it gets the look and tone most are after. This is probably the best bang for your buck you can get! Quote:

I will say, when I was doing the modern country cover gig scene, I was using my old Modulus Q5 and it sounded awesome. We all used in-ears so most all the band got the DI'd signal and they enjoyed how it sounded.
My desire to someday play kuntry again is why I'm holding onto my Lakland 55-94 lol. |

Don't rule out a 5 string p-bass though as I think it would be a great fit. My p5 sounds great for country both modern and old school.

Used Sterling by Musicman Ray35, or a new SUB Ray5. | I agree, especially with the SBMM Ray35 but the new SUB Ray5 is ridiculous bang for the buck...less than $300 out the door! |

I once used a quilty-top Modulus Q5 at some country gigs, but I knew ahead of time that the band wouldn't care.
After that, it doesn't matter: go with P, J, MM, whatever. |

I play a 'modern country' gig (Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean, Zac Brown, Eric Church, Keith Urban, etc) every Wednesday night & I've been using my P5 for every single show since I picked it up a few months ago - it handles the gig like a champ.

IF I wasn't set on a black and maple American Standard, I'd have jumped on it!
I do love my P5 that I think would work for you as well.

| | a/k/a Steve Cooper | | Join Date: Apr 2008 Location: Huntington WV | | | If you decide on a standard J config, I picked up a used Lakie Skyline Joe Osborne 5 (modded with an Audere pre, no less!) here on TB for a little more than your budget.
The 35" scale requires a bit more stretch in first position, but the B string is the best (meaning, most piano-like) I've ever heard. That's true of Lakies in general, IME. |

A used Fender or Fender Deluxe Mexican Jazz or a used G&L Tribute L-2500 would work great. If you are patient you could snag a used Lakland 55-01 for $500.
