77 P Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
so i found this on craigslist today and was interested so i gave the guy a call. they are a professional repair shop that "restored" the bass. the thing is that they are telling me that the only original parts on the bass are the neck and the pickup. the rest are new parts from fender. would you even consider calling this a "77 P bass" anymore? don't get me wrong, i think this thing looks freakin' awesome! i am just thinking that $1295 is too steep for what it really is. what do you think?

no i wouldnt consider it a true 77 but that price seems fair considering a whole '77 would run approx $2-4000, value of 77 neck is for those with that kind of dough, just as well, some fat cat would shell out 100-200 easily for a 77pup. so, broken out, it's actually kind-of a deal for that neck, that pup, a fende body & hardware (dont forget labor which is invisible in this deal)
i say, if you're in love & you got the juice, do it

$2-4K for an all-original '77 P bass would be too high, even in pristine condition... much less for one with non-original parts. Very deceptive ad.

No, I would not. If it is assembled with genuine Fender parts (especially the neck and body), then IMO, it is a Fender Precision with a '77 neck and pickup, but it is misleading to advertise it as a 1977 Precision.

+1

$1500-1750 is about standard for that era with mostly original equipment (replacement pickups and pots, bridge swapped, etc.) Assuming the Parts are genuine Fender or otherwise high quality replacements, I'm thinking that it's a $800-900 bass, and like $400-$450 of that is for the neck alone.

Talking

thanks guys. i may swing over and give it a test run tomorrow after work. if it plays and sounds like butter, i may try to hit him with a lower offer. i've been looking for a P for a while, and that sparkle green against maple is really sweet...

Agreed. And because of that, the asking price is too high. PurpleDrank's assessment is closer to the mark in that regard. Also make sure to find out if a case is included or not. If you're on the hook for your own case then even $800 is pushing the high side.

Regardless of the value of the bass, that color combo is gorgeous.
