78 P Bass pictures

Hi,

I recently purchased this bass here are some pics. If anyone has any info on the pots I would be grateful. Are they original? Also any general comments on the bass would be appreciated as it is my first real bass.

Thanks for looking!

They look genuine to me... Check the codes on the pots. If they are from 78, they should be R13778...

That cavity doesn't look right for a 78. You should have brass grounding plates in the control cavity and under the pickups.

p basses never had brass shield plates in their control cavity, but they did have one under the split pickup. jazz basses had them under the pickups and at the bottom of the control cavity.

and yes Martha, those appear to be the original pots, jack, wiring and capacitor for a '78 P bass. it looks like someone added a red bridge ground wire (they were black) and possibly grounded the pots to the jack as most, if not all of them used the foil shield on the guard to complete the grounding. (and your pickguard appears to be original as well).
