I love the sound I heard from an Alembic 8-string in Achilles Last Stand, and am curious if anybody has an 8-string (or other double-strung bass) or knows of other notable recordings with one. |

Cheap Trick, King's X, Pearl Jam...lots of 8 and 12-string basses have been used by the famous and not-so-famous over the years.
Current or recent makers include Waterstone, Schecter, ESP, Hagstrom, Hamer, Brice, Rogue...

No idea how JPJ does it. |

| | | | The title track from Material's Memory Serves album is I think my favorite recorded example of 8-string bass. Bill Laswell just thrashes the crap outta that instrument! |

Success Story on Who By Numbers has no guitar, it's 4-string bass and a prototype Rickenbacker 8-string running the leads and fills. Trick Of The Light on Who By Numbers is done in a similar way, but has some little guitar fills here and there. I believe he used an Alembic 8 on that one. When they did this tune live, Townshend played 4-string, Entwistle played 8-string. On his solo album Too Late The Hero, there is Alembic 8-string all over it. Check out some of the runs on "Dancing Master" where he's trading licks with Joe Walsh, and later with himself. Live with his own band in '95 I saw him use a custom Status 8-string, used it on Trick Of The Light and Success Story. Devastating tone.
I use a Dean Rhapsody 8 in my band on several tunes. Most fun is when I hit the overdrive and do the simple lead riff on "I'm a Believer". Comes in like a freight train. ;-)
