i usually get complaints because I'm shipping from Hawaii to the east coast...but I manage to ship it for about 65.00 using USPS fully insured.

usually on the continental US, ground shipping is used and I seen it go for as little as 15-25 bucks.

Depends on what you're paying for. Usually with UPS/Fedex they won't honor an insurance claim unless they did (or at least approved) the packaging, and the charge and arm and a leg to pack the instrument for you. If it's being shipped in a hard case then that adds weight and could also bring up the cost. I've shipped in hard cases with a box for $30-50, but when I've had to ship with a gig bag only and had UPS pack it's been upwards of $70 and $80 dollars all together.

I think Hawaii to the east coast is a little farther than Texas to Mo. The bass was a really good price but adding that much makes it still a good price but not great

I've had grumblings from people (ebay, etc.) about shipping costs from Alabama to the West Coast. It can cost 50-60.00, easily.

I have the local UPS or Fed Ex store box my basses when I ship. It's pricey, but if you insure, they are then on the hook for any damages. They can't pull the old "oh you didn't package it good enough."

Next day doesn't count. That's always gonna be pricey. So I guess 80 something isn't outrageous the bass is still 125 cheaper than I can get it anywhere else even shipped, I think I'm talking myself out of it though, I usually build all my own instruments and ts getting close to the cost of building my own.

Better than an extra 150 to cross the Pacific.. but that's what it costs to get a bass you can't get locally, especially if it's an out-of-production or vintage piece. Even a good used one, depending: if I lived in England, you bet I'd be buying everything on the American eBay site and paying half as much. As it is, there's no used market around here so if I can get something in good shape that isn't available used or new here (which is a LOT of instruments and effects), the extra cost is worth it.

The dimensions of the package factor into the cost....taking off the neck and shipping in a shorter box is the way to go...

Sounds like the seller is planning to take it to a UPS Store or Fedex and pay them to package it up for him - and pass that cost along to you.

I have shipped numerous basses all over the country in the last year and half and they're normally around $35, in a hardshell case inside a cardboard box - even going from FL to CA.

You could always tell the seller they need to package it up themselves and get the shipping cost down to under $40 or you're not going to buy it.

That's just not reality. I've shipped at least 4 basses in the last 8 months. Even with my own packaging I've never paid less than $50. Insurance is what can really increase the cost. I've paid over $27 in insurance alone for basses worth $1500+.

And only time I've had trouble shipping instruments is when USPS is involved.

You got ripped off. I'd suggest doing more research next time.
