Question 80's Fender P tones

Sign in to disble this ad
Last night I plugged my 1985 MIJ Fender P bass into my practice amp and listened though headphones to get a clear understanding of what my bass really sounded like tonally.

From what I could hear, it really had this synth style hum when I struck the E and A strings. It almost sounded like I was playing an 80's Korg synthesizer!

I was just wondering, do other decade Fenders have a tone that matches the music of that particular decade? If I had a 60's Fender, would it have more of a classic rock tone? Are the split coil p'ups designed differently each year? Or is this just a result of the amp I was playing it thorugh?

Just curious.
