80s Ric in my local CL

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all!

This just popped up on craigslist.

Rickenbacker

I've never seen a Ric that looked like this one, but after some searching, it may be 2020 model from the 80s.

Does anyone have any experience with them? Is this a fake or a copy? If it's a real Ric, I'm guessing $300 is steal!

Any info would be great! Thanks

They have bolt-on necks, and sell for substantially less than a 4001, but $300 is a good deal for sure.

According to this, it may be a 2020 due to the controls.

Have you played one Jim? How close does it get to the classic Ric sound?

Different animal. Not bad, but it doesn't sound like a 4001. If you hate it, you can easily flip it.

Sound wise, is it similar to a P, J, MM, or something completely different?

That is a 2020. The pictures are really crappy. But that is a nice bass. It is worth at least 3 times what he is asking. Those 2020 basses are pretty rare. They are perfect basses for punk or Billy Idol. They sound pretty much identical to a 4004. They have the same pickups and the same electronics as the 4004.

$300 for anything with the Ric name is a pretty solid buy.

You'd be foolish not to buy it if you're close.

If you buy it and don't like it then talk to me and I might buy it from you. I want to convert a 2020 into an 8 string bass.

10 would be nice ... but there isn't room for 10 strings on that neck.

Yeah, go for it!

As huge of a Ric fan that I am, I don't think I've ever seen one in person, or even heard one that I'm aware of. Same goes for the 3000 series.

Despite them being the 'budget' Ric lines with bolt on necks, they're a lot less common than the 4001/4003's are, and can command some pretty strong prices online. I've seen the 3000 models listed for $1000-$1200 every once in a while.

There's really no reason not to get it; even if you hate it you could probably make a nice profit. Practically anything with the Rickenbacker name can get you near $1000...

So after multiple attempts to contact them, the seller finally responded to my inquiry saying that the bass was still available. The then asked if the bass was all original, to which he replied that only the knobs and one tuner was after market. Upon asking if I could demo the bass sometime today, they decided not to respond.

I'm going to be on that today trying to get this bass. I've been wanting a Rickenbacker so so so bad! And $300 is a steal!

Hopefully everything goes through and you get it. It's a pretty awesome deal, and if I had the spare cash I'd jump on it myself just to add to my slowly growing collection of Rics

Any elaboration coming?

The guy finally got back to me and I may have a chance to demo it out in a few hours. What kind of things should I be looking for to make sure that it is the real deal? I've stared at the pic posted above for a long long time! Are there things on the neck, pups or body that are obvious signs of this thing being the 2020?
