My band is playing our first paying gig at a boat club in late august. we were recently informed that they would like us to do a cover of a late 70's-80's rock song. were a reggae/funk/rock/indi/alternative band. they want something recognizable. any suggestions?

Two...

Sheena Is a Punk Rocker, by the Ramones, or My Sharona, by the Knack. Or both. Plus What I Like About You. As well as We Got the Beat, by the Go-gos and Walkin' on Sunshine, by Katrina and the Waves.
OK, more than two. Sorry. I'll stop now.

Perhaps posting in "Band Mangement" or one of the areas related to bands and performance, rather than "Basses"?

The Police is a good suggestion (especially since you mentioned that you play reggae). Take your pick - there are a whole bunch of songs that will elicit cheers from the audience:

"Walking On The Moon"
"Message In A Bottle"
"Roxanne"
"Spirits In A Material World"
"Driven To Tears"
"So Lonely"
"When The World Is Running Down"
"Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic"
