81-82 G&L L1000 HOT pickup!

Sign in to disble this ad
My G&L L1000 is a beast! this bass has such a strong output it clips my pre amp on my SWR SM500 easy and its with the gain at 10-11oclock. It seems way more sensitive than my Modulus and my warwick? doesnt seem right cause my other basses are active and this old monster is passive. Is it because if the type of pickup in the l1000? I was thinkin of selling it but i just played it and WOW

Try using the active input/pad switch on your amp

You can go to center position on the OMG switch too.

My EBMM's will also clip on the same setting on my SWR. That amp is sensitive on the input to humbuckers.

The early G&Ls had the most powerful pickups I've ever experienced for sure! The pickups in my '82 L2000 are more powerful than any actives I've used even in passive mode (in fact Active mode on that bass has always been more or less unuseable because of the huge bass and output levels). I've never had another pickup that sounded as massive either!

I wouldn't recommend using the "active" setting on your amp if you can avoid it though- there is usually a change in tone associated with the change in input impedance with those switches (a darker tone generally).

I run my L1Ks through my GK700RBII in 5 string mode EQ'd flat with a tad of low mid added (low end enhanced), and the bass in Bass boost mode with bass cut backed off (full bass) nearly all the way with treble dialed in for the tone I want. The L1K is my favorite bass of all time. Killer low end output. I don't use the active padded mode either. I do run the head through Hartke Hydrive 115 (500W RMS) and Hydrive 410 (1000W RMS) and these bottoms handlie it just fine with some headroom left. The rig is typically mid heavy, but the L1K pushes the lows in. But, you will just about get blown off your feet if you stand in front of the bottoms. My P-bass and JB and SR-4 run through the same rig in passive mode and come out clean as can be and also sound great. A touch of boost is used on the head for growl but not often used. On some tunes I use the L1K SC setting and engage some bass cut. I don't play loud, but you can hear the mids and highs, and definately feel the low end. Great basses bound to be discovered some day.

Very meaty. I tried it yesterday with my band. The lows are thunderous, punchy as hell. I was playing through Ampeg SVT 2 PRO with my two old Mesa Boogie 1x15 Road Ready. It sriously blows.

I miss my old L1000! For whatever reason, I could never quite dial in the same sound with the L2000 despite many wiring modifications. Overall I prefer the L2000 for the versatility of the second pickup, but the L1000 easily does the best P-bass on steroids tones that exist! I was playing through a Mesa 400+ and 2x15 when I had mine, so I can imagine how great it must sound through the SVT II/215 rig!

I'm gonna start a new thread about how the G&L MFD pickups are thin, reedy, ball-less and microphonic, and everyone should rip them out immediately and put them on the 'Bay with a $5 buy-it-now option and free shipping.

(You guys are giving away the best-kept secret in bassdom, the G&L MFD's are the schizznit!)

Unfortunately the old Talkbass G&L-specific sponsored forum is no longer as G&L decided to stop paying for the space, which means you can't reply to that thread anymore. There is alot of great G&L info archived on that forum though from years of thread activity...

My SB-2 is the only bass that I've ever played that will push my Shuttle into full-blown tube distortion!

The MFD in the SB series is ridiculous. It even goes head-to-head with my L2500

Thinking of buying an L1000 for sale locally, anyone still using them for gigging?
