About to build my first "parts" bass, tips?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm about to start building my first parts bass, I've got what I suspect to be a mighty mite P-Bass body, a maple mighty mite P-Bass neck, a fender style bridge, neck plate, GFS P-Bass pickup, tuners, strap buttons, x2 1 Meg pots, and an input jack. I've watched several video in how to build one and am pretty sure I know what I'm doing. Any tips before I start?

Make sure the neck pocket is made for that same neck. They vary.

GFS makes some righteous p'ups - I have them too.

Well, you might have more luck posting this in the Luthier's Corner.

You might also want to read the posted sticky, New "How to" section.

My own personal tip? The old adage of "measure twice and cut once" is a good rule to follow. In other words, take your time. There's nothing more annoying than having to fix a mistake you could have avoided with a little care in the first place.

Good luck with the build.

I couldnt agree more with the above statement by ghostdog93...
I built a strat with mighty mite parts years ago, the neck fit the pocket but I didnt get it in there completely straight. a millimeter at the headstock end becomes about a quarter inch at the body in misalignment.

Also...get a good METAL yardstick to use as a straight edge.

Give the nut just as much attention as the rest of the parts.
