Each bass varies from one to another. Find one that feels and sounds good to you and then weight it to know what weight feels good on your shoulder. Cheers.

Really depends on the wood. My '76 feels like it weighs double what my other basses weigh. But I've held both light and heavy P-basses from the era. I think there were 3 different body woods used, someone correct me if wrong, but I think they were ash, swamp ash and alder. One is considerably heavier than the rest it would seem! (now someone can correct to finer points in my wood history)

the AV RI '62 jazz has always been (and still is) made of alder. they can vary from 8 1/4lbs (the very lightest ones) to about 9 3/4lbs. most of them that i've played weighed 9 -9 1/2 lbs.
