Accidently trying a fretless.

Was at GC again today (my guitarist is freakin awesome) and I was trying out basses. Decided to give some fenders a try just to say I did so. Played a Fender P, Fender J, and then picked up a J and started noodeling. After a few minutes i realized it sounded different. Looked down at the fretboard and it was fretless.

I played it surprizing well and intune. It's always good to find out that you're capable of stuff you never though you could do.

and for the record I wasn't wowed by any of the Fender's I tried.

I'm wowed by how you could play a bass for more than 3 seconds and not realize it's a fretless.

lmao or I should probably pay more attention to what I'm doing from time to time. I was more focused on the brand name as aposed to what I was actually playing.

On the second job after I joined a band, the drumber arranged for me to play a borrowed fretless jazz with an eye toward me purchasing it from his friend. I feel now that it was a test since I had casually mentioned to him in the interview before the initial audition that I had played fretless almost exclusively for fifteen years previously.

I feel that he (as do many people) considered fretless to be some special class of very difficult-to-play bass and he wanted to see if I could do it more than get me to buy it from his friend since he knew my financial situation precluded such a purchase.

I played the entire gig with that fretless jazz (which had flats on it and was 'draggy' to me since I play rounds usually) and nobody in the band or in the audience noticed that it was fretless (I was replacing a very much loved bassist so their ears were tuned in, so to speak) except for the drumber.

I could almost, I say almost, let me repeat, almost understand the OP's point. However, there are substantial differences between fretted and fretless (such as, for instance, the lack of frets on the one and the presence of frets on the other) and so I do not think that this thread has been started entirely honestly and I think "more than three seconds" is pushing it but I appreciate the humor as I wind down from the gig I just played hours earlier with an extremely defective drumber.

Thanks...

Just a warning, you should pay more attention as one day you may think you are playing a bass and it ends up actually being a lawnmower.

Man! You have a serious knack for playing a very difficult instrument. You must have an awesome ear because you played it so well despite the fact that the intonation is very challenging to get used to for most of us players. But you took to it like a duck to water. Wow! You're surely the next big thing when it comes to fretless bass. Probably the next Jaco.

Receiving a reply like that was the sole purpose of creating this thread, wasn't it?

What's a "drumber"?!
Is that anything like a drummer...just dumber?

The question isn't "how did you not notice?", the question is "Would you consider getting a fretless of some sort and playing one more often?"

haha! this thread delivers.

Trying out gear at GC isn't always the best idea.....none of the guitars you played had been set up, and with 10 minutes of work could probably play much better. I tried out 2 squier VM's last week, both had action 1/2 inch off the fretboard....absolutely unplayable. That's pretty pathetic.

Also, what does your guitar player being awesome have to do with going to GC??? Is he one of those guys who noodles very loudly at GC to show off??? Love those guys(sarcasm). Anyways, it was just wierd that you threw that in there. Are there recordings where we can hear how awesome he is?
