Add me to the list in general and the GAS Kala-U list as well. Here are my two current babies:

This early 60s, made in Holland, Rosetti Bass 8, was heavily rebuilt by a luthier on the island of St. John before finding its way to me.

No real stories behind this Tacoma Thunderchief which is my daily player. Pawn shop find when I wasn't really looking or even playing all that much.

TI's do not have enough tension for me. I tried them a few times. I use Elixirs now, I play in two bands with my ABG. I use GK amps but recently bought a Roland Micro Cube Bass RX for busking and anywhere there is no power. It sounds great at lower volumes. A tiny, lightweight battery powered amp that you can also plug in. Only good for practice in small rooms or busking. Not for a full on gig unless you play in a dead quiet cafe, folk music, or something of that nature.

Fabulous! May I ask how much such a bass costs? I know, I know: If you have to ask...

in response to the two posts about my kompact:

it is a kinal kompact acoustic bass made by luthier mike kinal: http://www.kinal.com/

there surprisingly inexpensive as far as customs go, a standard 4 string model will cost $1550 (mine was a bit more expensive as i had some custom options added). it is possible to get a fretted model, fellow TB'er lokire has a 6 string fretted model that is insane!!

there killer basses, amazing tone, great playability, and there not hard on the eyes

edited to add: expect to wait 6+ months for one, mine took 7 months to build. so while the price may not be the killer, the wait sure is!

I like the idea if they are lighter than a slab bass. Probably sounds more mellow than a hollow F-hole bass. I do not like heavy basses any longer. I would need a full scale as all my basses are 34" except for my uprights which are 41" scale. I like the idea.

they are 30" scale, im not sure if you could get mike to build you a 34" scale, but you could ask.

My kompact (30" scale) does feel lighter than my lakland JO5 (obviously) but it feels heavy for it's size. its not the lightest bass in the world. i would doubt that a 34" variant would be any lighter than a solid body bass, maybe a bit, but not drastically.

edit: i find the joy of the bass is in it's small size though, being 30" it is nice and portable, and its a blast to play with its low string tension. comming from a 35" JO5, its just plain fun

Are there 30" strings readily available? What do you use on the kompact?

right now im using short scale hi-beams that came with the bass, im thinking about switching to thomastik-infeld acousticores though. they seem to be the acoustic string of choice... or maybe labella tapewounds.... decisions decisions
