Acoustic bass guitar - Alternatives to a Fender Kingman

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi!

I've been trying different ABGs lately since I'm evaluating the possibility of replacing my Fender BG-29.

After trying a few models, I surprised myself liking the Fender Kingman quite alot (switching from a Fender to another seems a bit useless but...). What I liked of the Kingman is the fact that it's a long scale, the neck feels great (it's a jazz bass neck so, well...) and the action was pretty low. I could slap the thing easily, fun to play. On the down side, it's a bit quite, almost the same body then the BG-29 I currently own (except for the solid top, which makes the Kingman sing a little more).

So I was wondering, in a not so much higher price range then a Kingman, is there any other ABG with a similar neck feel and possibility of low action (without mods)?

I don't know about action, because I'm not familiar with the kingman, but regarding sound volume and scale length, I can recommend Tacoma's Thunderchief.
If you drop the long scale requirement, you could go for the Warwick Alien, which is probably the most comfortable ABG I ever played (it has the neck of a Corvette, only shorter, and not quite as big a body as the Thunderchief). It sounds superb, but a little quieter than the Thunderchief.
I own both and don't plan on getting rid of any of them in the near future

I don't know...
There's something about that headstock on an ABG that just doesn't seem right. Probably my hang up.

See if you can try a Takamine EG512. Mine has served well for a number of years. Paid ~$350.00 on the Bay. Also keep in mind, low action and max acoustic volume do not go hand in hand.

I'm aware of the contradiction between low action and high volume, I'm just looking for a good balance between the 2. There's so many ABG out there that simply can't be set to a medium-low action...
