Acoustic bass? Pignose Hog30?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I am thinking of making an acoustic band w/ 1 acoustic guitar, 1 djembe, and myself(bass)

Vocal is going to play djembe, and he is really loud (w/ great voice)

I have heard that even though I have an acoustic bass, I would need an amplifier anyway.

so, I was thinking, how about using portable amplifier that can be carried around, and plug my bass whenever we are practicing or maybe performing.

I really don't know anything about acoustic bass nor portable bass amp.

I am planning to sell my bass pod xtl to buy amp or acoustic bass.

If i can sell bass pod xtl, it will be $350 including my own money.

p.s. yeah, I am a student who can't get any part-time job as I am an international student

Cheers

I briefly played in an acoustic bluegrass band with acoustic guitar, mandolin, lap steel, and fiddle, and even using a pick and striking hard, I couldn't make myself heard. you will need at least some amplification if you aren't rocking a full upright.

Roland Bass Micro-Cube? I've seen them in the 250-260 range.

I sat in with a guitar player and a mandolin player on bass through a Hog 30. It was OK, but nothing to get excited about.

I have had a couple of ABGs, and neither one was useful unamplified. The Hog 30 is probably the smallest out there for amps.

There are lots of naysayers when it comes to ABG's but, I've had an ABG in my arsenal for quite a while and couldn't see myself without it.

Accept the fact that you WILL need to plug it in and go from there.

I'd recommend fretless with tapewounds. That's how I have my Michael Kelly setup and I can dial up some nice, deep bottom.

Very true. I strung up both my ABGs (the Martin and an Ibanez AB305 I had a few years ago with LaBella nylon tape wound strings. They were louder than the standard strings, and didn't have the clanginess of the brass ones.

I'm not really a naysayer: I've owned two, but I guess each time I thought it would be more useful than it proved to be. They are great when you want to preserve a faux-acoustic "look" (I played the Ibanez with a group that included fiddle, banjo and mandolin as well as guitar) but at heart, I'm a rock and roller. I can't quite get used to throwing my arms around a big honkin' guitar body. And I now have a thoroughly electric Godin A5 fretless that has the look without the bulk.

Thanks guys.

But I was wondering that Roland Micro amp for bass would not be loud enough.

And, yeah, I would love to find another battery-powered amp, as we are planning to do only busking.

Cheers

Djembes can get louder than drum kits. If he's not controlled, you're stuffed either way. I play a fretless acoustic and it's great but not loud enough for a djembe player.

AFAIK the Roland is the biggest/loudest battery powered amp.

I'd look for an used Phil Jones Briefcase amp. They're a great little amps and battery power option too

My Breedlove ABG and Pignose HOG-30 works for all my portable needs...

...allowing me to play anywhere, with anybody, without access to electrical power;

busking on the street, in the park, at the beach, etc., etc., etc...

mAXEd, that was EXACTLY the kind of post I was hoping for. I'm playing a Breedlove and that's the kind of thing I'd need the Hog-30 for. Thanks!

I used a micro bass cube for about 2 weeks ... before i was able to get my own amp... only used for practice in my house.

I've tried the hog 30 just for a short jam session with acoustic guitars ... did well along with 2 guitars.

For battery powered you can't go wrong with either... they work. If I was in the market to purchase... Micro Bass Cube all the way... you can just pop in some AA's and play... it's lighter ... has cool effects ... personally i liked the tone i could get out of it. Aside from the fact i already have an arsenal of rechargeable AA's.

I suggest you go to a guitar center if you are able and try out a bass cube rx ... the form factor is hard to beat
