advice on different companies

Sign in to disble this ad
So I play an Ibanez SR500. Haven't had any problems with it so far. Nice feel, weight, found a string set I'm happy with(DR black beauties), 24 FRETS(wont play anything else), the small jazz neck is my ideal neck, but the bass itself is not up to par with the levels of play I'm at.

I need some advice or whatever about some companies to look into for a future bass. It will mainly be used for jazz, funk, and hip hop. Anything but fender

thanks

What's not up to par on the Ibby?

As a brand, I think they're either #1 or #2 in popularity.

As far as Jazz, Funk, and Hip Hop, I think you can safely go with anything (except Ernie Ball, of course).

I think your Ibanez would meet your up to par level as you say with either a pup change, preamp change, or both. So long as your effects/processor and or amp is "up to par" with your playing level. What about its sound do you want to change? And have you tried readjusting the pups first to see if that solves the problem? Sometimes pup adjustment can make a bass or guitar sound like its got diff better pups in it. Otherwise pup replacment is best bet. If that still doesnt get you quite there. Then a diff preamp also should do the trick imo. Unless theres something else beside its sound thats bothering you now? It possible that diff bart pups and or diff bart preamp might do better for you. Or diff brand for pups and or preamp. As best I can tell from your post the playability, fit and feel is still just fine for you. That just leaves sound.

Sorry... To answer your question I'd probably look into a Yamaha BBNE (or older 414), Lakland 4460 or 4464 or G&L JB, SB1, or SB2

He will only play basses with 24 frets.

Ah yes, those all important three or four extra notes... I didn't read that in the OP.

Most likely an abbreviation for pickups.
