i would say a peavey grind 4 bxp ntb, great bass for only $379. it really is a steal. the tone is great and the comfort is amazing. but the best thing you can do is go into your local music store and take a look around.

What Kind of Music do you play?

New or Used?

you could get a pretty nice bass for $500.00 on the used market...

As for brand new: Squier, Ibanez, SX, Dean to name a few. I'm sure most people will chime in and say the Squier CV and VM series is a great bang for your buck bass. $500 can get you a lot more in the used market though.

G&L Tribute L2000/L2500. It will be at the top end of $500, but it will destroy most anything else under $500. You may also be able to find a used Brubaker Brute for under $500. Jump on it if you do.

its personal deal, but when I think cheap bass, I am thinking < $200 .. there can be a big difference in a $199 new bass and a $500 used bass (as mentioned) ... perhaps a little more criteria would help to more accurately categorize the suggestions you will receive ... JHMO

I bought a Cort GB34A used for 130€ (new it goes for 250€) and people always tell me it's really well made and it should cost more, so I'd recommend it.

If you don't like it for some reason I'd suggest an SX, they're really well made.

The new MTD Kingston Saratoga line comes in at your price range. I've played one and they are very nice. Others include the Cort Artisan B4 and the Ibanez SR500 (near identical). I'm also a big G&L Tribute fan (I have 3 USA ones). Another route would be to get a used Carvin. High materials and build quality, made in the USA, and not too hard to find used one for around $400 with HSC.

Up to $500 allows for many many great choices. In the $400 and under range Id say Ibanez and ESP Ltd gives best bang for buck. Schecters are very nice to but tend to cost a bit more for comprable bass but are worth a look since your budget allows dfor a bit more.
