My first and only bass i own is a silvertone revolver(a cheap! p bass knock-off). i have replaced the pickups with some EMG selects so now it sounds halfway decent. It sounds like a regular p bass with ceramic pickups.
i am looking for a second bass that is different than my first. so far it have tried a:
- epiphone thunderbird (i like the deep bass sound on this one. It was very heavy weight-wise though)
- squier p bass special (i like the p and jazz bass option on this one, the neck is a bit thick though)
I have looked at but not tried:
-ibanez gsr200 (the p/ jazz option and the extra bass boost knob sounds nice)
-ibanez sr300
-squier vintage modified jaguar bass
-squier vintage modified jazz bass
so can you guys give me some options and opinions on what i should look at for a nice second bass that has a different sound from my p bass knock-off.
by the way i mostly like to play rock, punk, ska(1st, 2nd, and 3rd wave), blues, jazz, basically a nice little variety. i also play with my fingers, with a pick and some slap and pop.

SR300 is basically their entry level Soundgear. Some other decent but less expensive brands include Peavey, Yamaha, Carvin, Spector Legend, Schecter... They are all good value for their price.

If you want something that sounds different from your P, a J is probably the way to go. Then again, a nice sounding P might be more to your taste? I have a Fender Jazz, these days I swoon over a nice P. Then the arsenal is complete!

| | | | thanks for all the advice guys. i think i've narrowed it down to a vintage modified or classic vibe jazz bass or a epiphone thunderbird.
i like the nice difference in sound from a p bass in the jazz bass, but i also like the epic boomy bass from the thunderbird. i still have time to decide because i've put aside only about $33 dollars for a new bass, i should have some money coming in soon though. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
