It seems like some of us think the OP is the one who built the machine. I don't think so. I think he's just showing us. So I'm not sending him any basses.

I have a plan. You send your basses to the guy the DID do this, and I'll get him to send them to me!

The video is impressive. It would be neat to see the computer interface here and see if it is as sophisticated as the machine.

Quite the can of worms I've opened with an innocent, fun post, it would seem.

I am not, nor do I purport to be, the creator of this piece of engineering. I merely posted the link as I found it interesting and thought some fellow TB members might too.

Please accept my apologies for having been syntactically incorrect - I can assure you it was unintentional and will not happen again

NAH. Beyond the name calling it is a very interesting thing. My problem is that technology seldom excites me anymore: I've lived long enough and seen enough rapid change and progression I think I'm becoming ambivalent as I age. I am not jazzed by novelty much anymore.

Of course the novelty is the first thing and then everyone points out how the new thing "isn't as good" as the old ways. But that really isn't the essence of "technology".

For example, did the mechanical mechanism of a piano "ruin" the musical expression one can get from a harp because there your human fingers are directly plucking the strings with no "technology" intervening? Was the piano going to put all harp players out of business?

But the actual history is always the same. New "technology" comes along and everyone hmmms and looks at it commenting, but basically nobody is really sure what to do with it. So it's just a novelty of not much importance. But then over time, creative human musicians start to get ideas of what to acually USE the new thing for. And a "classic" musical repetoire is slowly built up over the years for it. And only then years later can one look and assess the actual musical "value" of the ideas whatever they are. So the "new" thing may turn out to be something of importance (electric bass guitar) or just a flash in the pan. Only time will tell.

You, sir, are a harbinger of doom! You bring this abomination upon us bass players who can't seem to get camera time on national TV (unless we're Adam Clayton or Flea) and you expect us to think it's interesting? A pox on you!

Oh, begorrah and begosh, you'll have to forgive me, sorr. I've been eatin' the winter's supply of potatoes and must have overdone it.

The leprechauns will surely have me away this night

Apologies notwithstanding, I'm still not sending you any basses.

I can understand the insecurities that some folks feel when they see a machine that exceeds their habilities.

US. That's US.

Anyway, it's cool enough, but someone needs to design something that can dance to it.

"MechBass: a robotic bass guitar that sounds fantastic."

See, the thing is, it doesn't. It sounds like electronicadisco.

Which is to say, fake-o, crap-o.

I'm surprised no one has brought up the band "Captured By Robots"...
It's a "band" of evil robots that enslaved a guitarist and made him play music with them.

In reality, it's one of the most amazing shows I've ever seen, with the enslaved human actually being the guy who makes them all talk and ridicule him.
And the "robots" are all sequenced, with servo motors on just about everything. They were all built by the guy who does the show and it blew my frickin' mind.

Don't know if the act still tours, but it's 100% awesome and an amazing show to see.
