It went out a hair before the James Johnston's Jazz actually hit the stores
Good pop/rock music, at last
Cheers,

First of all I discovered I didn't like the new pickups on the American Standard, the older style sounded more lively to me.
Here is the shocker though, my favorite jazz was a Squiere CV James Johnson model. I tried it head to head with the American Standards and the Mexican Jazz Basses and I just liked the Squire better. I always take my time buying new instruments, so I walked away to think about it. I will probably go back this week and buy it.
BTW I never heard of James Johnson or Biffy Clyro. | I have never, ever been in the presence of a Squier. Are you saying that they are not made from Plywood, Chipboard, Soft Plastics and metals that melt at body temperature? |

From being excellent, they get blander with each one after that point. IMHO, of course. (Only Revolutions was the fifth.)
But I do like the bass, or the JJJ as I've never called it before.

Cheers,
Wallace | I couldn't tell you what wood my Squier P Special is made from, but it sounds great, so I don't care if it's agathis or plywood really.

The CV Squier models are very good basses along with the vintage modified models. I would say go with whatever you like best...if you like the Squier then it only makes sense to get that bass. No you're not crazy for wanting to get the bass YOU felt was the best of them. |

Just kiddin' (as always )
agathis, by the way, agathis: I sometimes feel like Van Helsing

The American basses probably got a lot more play, the strings were probably more dead. |

| | Just one more question | | Join Date: Aug 2011 Location: San Franciscco, CA | | | I got to put the bass through a workout last night. Played our set list for Sunday, I liked it. It's lighter and easier to play than my Precision. Very comfortable to play sitting down, no dipping or other struggles. The neck is fast and smooth but the dots are smaller and harder too see. No problems with the tuners they turned smoothly and stayed in tune. The intonation is a little flat on the D string but the rest are fine. That should be easy to fix. I'm still experimenting with the pickups, I found myself mostly playing with both pickups at 3/4 amd the tone set at about 1/2.
All in all it's just what a wanted, a back up for my P-Bass with some different tonal possiblities. Because it is lighter it will be my first choice when I have to take mass transit to rehersal. I just don't like the feel of the rounds that came on it but I do like the tone. I'll probably try throwing on an extra set of D'addario half rounds to see how that sounds. Has anyone tried halfrounds on a Jazz?
I really like this bass but my 50's classic Precision will still be my main go to bass. My presicion is like a cool North Long Beach short cruising up Atlantic Blvd, and the Jazz is more like a Mini Cooper zipping around the corner at 45 MPH.
I will be bringing the Jazz to rehersal tomorrow and using it for our set on Sunday. Can't wait to see how it fits in the mix.
All I need now is some strap locks and a blue padded strap.

Haven't tried half rounds in a long long time, but I put a set of D'Addario Warm Mellow flats on my CV Jazz and am extremely happy with the feel and the sound. Those strings really bring out the Classic Vibe and should be on any Classic series Bass IMHO.

Although everything seemed the same on this one as the CV the neck on the JJ felt smaller and it seemed like the frets were dressed better. The whole bass also felt lighter, and the pickups seemed hotter. They were pretty close though and I played them both a lot before I could decide. It may not be the same for all the CV and JJ basses it could have been just these two basses.

I bought a "Vintage Modified Precision" (for $279) to have a bass I could take to the bars we were gigging in and not worry about dings or scratches. I installed a $60 Fender "62 Original" pickup (this was several years ago - I think they've gone up in price), and it sounded just fine. It is less than 8 pounds, and the neck is shallower front-to-back than my US Precision, and I find the shallower neck more comfortable. The satin finish on the neck is very smooth and fast. The tuners are kind of crappy, but they do their job. I now have some flats on it, and it is one of my favorite basses to play! It's hard not to be biased against them (to be honest, I *am* a little embarrassed by it sometimes) - but they really are rather good. |
