Or a Ray34 or new Sterling SUB

I believe he's using a pick, so that is adding a little twang and bite to the sound, but to my ear, it sounds great. The sustain is pretty sweet too. NBD - Fender Blacktop Jazz Bass
I got to try one out a couple of weeks ago. Very ballsy! If I ever get into a "playing on stage" situation, I'll likely invest in one.

| | | | Nice nice - Now let me change it up --- how would this differ to the Modern Player jazz ---- I always thought I was looking for humbuckers... lots of love for the split coil on the blacktop.
But wait... the modern player is the same price - Made in China, though (I could care less where it's made) - but Fender tags it as more of a beginner instrument.
So if I'm looking at the MP --- would that have a ballsy sound as well and build quality to match the MIM Blacktop?

Right now I'm playing a 2012 Hand Stained Jazz (mahogany w/ maple neck) and I friggin love it... BUT
I have chronic GAS syndrome and really want to find something that sounds totally different. Something with a little less "smoothness"? I guess... I was thinking something along the lines of one of the new Gibson EB basses - My budget is more like half that so I'm debating something like a Blacktop P-Bass or Yamaha BB424.
Just something that will give a different sound - maybe hotter and grittier.
Let me also put the caveat in here that "go play a bunch and see what you like" is a crap-answer. I really don't have the time and if you've noticed, brick and mortar stores have the diverse selection of a mid 1940s German army...
so that's why I ask my TB homies.
Thanks in advance. |

I played one once after putting fresh strings and a setup on it for a friend.
Nice enough bass; and certainly Not a Jazz
