Was it an easy transition?
What brand/luthier did you choose?
whats your ideal string spacing?
Any real neck problems?
Thanks for replying. Not excluding Stew or John but I know they are and they have a wealth of material here already. Pleases chime in though because I'm really giving serious thought to moving up to even spaced 8, and changing my aproach to bass alltogether.

Sounded really good, but the neck was just plain gigantic. Reminded me of playing bass with a ski for a neck.

I went to Bass pro shop and to my surprise they didn't have a single bass guitar.

Unfortunately this bass bit the dust during hurricane Katrina. Stew has a new Conklin 10 string now. I don't have any pictures of it though. |

As far as what pushed me up the hill (not off the cliff yet!), was actually Bill Conklin. I approached him about building me another 7 and he suggested the 8 (adding the low F#). Admittedly, it was a more difficult transition than was 6 to 7...adding the low F# threw my right hand navigation outta whack for a good bit, but soon enough it was all worth it
I (knock on woods) haven't had any issue with the bass as far as neck tension, tuning, or much else. It was two truss rods and graphite rods, so it's pretty stable.
The assets of having the added range are pretty obvious...The one (and big) drawback is the weight. The beautiful beast is a boat anchor. A good strap helps but at 1:30am, it's taken its toll
Hope that helps!
(Please excuse the dramatic stage lighting in the attached picture)

In the interim, I've been playing a prototype fretless 8 made by a local cat. The prototype has some issues (bad neck dive being one of them) so it's really not a gigging bass.
For all practical purposes, the 7's do just about everything I need in my gigging environments. The 8 is definitely not a neccessity for me and will be used primarily for some small duo work with a guitar player ...
It wasn't a huge transition for me, but again, I'm not gigging with the big boy yet .... all things are pretty easy when you're sitting in your room by yourself .... |

I have a solemn vow not to give out any details or pics until the builder gets the bugs worked out (it's his very first attempt at a bass). But as soon as I get the go ahead, I'll be glad to post up .... |

Have recently been thinking of getting a new preamp installed... Maybe one of the 2 Band types they put in the Low End Jazz basses!
