Elites had MB-IIIs. | I took the quick and easy way out and bought a pair of mb-v s with the noise cancelling preamp and full wiring harness. Now I want to see what the tech does with that in a SB R80/Elite II layout. It will apparently be some sort of super charged Cliff Burton reissue frankenstein bass in a beautiful body. I kind of wish I had found a more direct replacement but maybe I could sell the mb-v s if I don't like them. I believe the whole transaction including shipping was about the same as 1 Rautia pickup. I was not aware that Rautia did all of the MB variations, I would have needed to investigate that further before the quick action which might have been driven by the fact that it was their last remaining Aria SB pickups and they were eager to get rid of them. Let us know if you buy anything and what they offer since it's not on their site. |

You need to be able to push it when testing. No bedroom volume. Feel comfortable testing, don't go in sheepish. If it is not worth the money you bid, then that is it. It is not worth the money and walk away. It is not the last amp in the world.

It is not the last amp in the world. | It's not only not the last amp in the world, it's not even a bass amp is it? I's a six channel powered mixer from what I can see and using that as a bass head would be less than exciting. You'd have plenty of other inputs for CD players and drum machines and other bassists but the preamp might not give you the best gain structure or tone control and it's probably under powered too.
Here's a reasonable bass amp that one can grow into: http://www.timeelect.com/400-histy.htm |

Otherwise I go through whatever backline has been rented. |

I picked up a Metal Muff and a Morley Power Wah for some Cliff screams.

I played through a Sansamp BDDI, into my Mesa Walkabout head and through a Mesa powerhouse cab. The net effect was awesome. I love this SB. |

Did you use the 6 position tone selector much, or just play it in bypass mode? Quote:

Active engaged with all. (I call it "Active" - apologies if wrong term).
- "6" for finger style numbers.
- "3" with a pick for almost (to my ear) a P bass type sound for punkier numbers.
- "1" for smooth, round "sub-bass" lines.
I found all three thoroughly usable. All with volume and tone wide open, except for one (cover of "with or without you) where I used setting "1" and dialed back on the tone a little too.
I said this before and I'll say it again. I have searched for this tone for 30 years and feel I have found it at last.

I played the F out of that bass for 8 years, then traded it in 1997. The passive pickups in that thing weighed about 3 lbs. each; they were huge. I swapped them out for EMG active soapbars.
I saw some pics in this thread of someone's SBIIE, and it brought back fond memories.
Here's a pic of me playing it at a gig in 1992.
