Hey, I wrap my thumb over the neck too. For instance when playing Dust In The Wind on an acoustic guitar or when playing certain other songs on bass. Anytime it is convenient to grab a note on the E string with my thumb. 99% of the time though the pad of my thumb is the only thing in contact with the neck. You'll notice that in most of those pictures of Vic up there, only the pad of his thumb is in contact with the neck. I guarantee you that Geddy doesn't routinely, unnecessarily wrap his whole thumb around the neck either, much less his whole hand.

I am not preaching to anyone. I am quite sure most of you guys with poor technique absolutely smoke me on bass. I am also quite sure that you could help yourself out greatly by practicing the proper way to hold the bass ( in general usage). Not only is it safer for your tendons, but it dramatically increases reach. To each their own though and rest assured I certainly meant no disrespect to any of you.

Ill second your Geddy comment. Check out any of the DVD they have out and you'll see his thumb over the top. Doesn't matter someone will be along shortly to argue

Well, I can't say I know either way, but I believe you. I sure ain't saying that you can't be great and have poor technique. The Smiley was innocent, swear.

Is that proper technique or poor technique in your avatar photo so at least I'm clear on what you mean.

Just not sure if your being a troll or not? Both right and left hands in your avatar are displaying technique reminiscent of guitar players turned bass players.

Just out of curiosity, how can you guarantee something you admittedly don't know?

Ah, the old attack on pick players thing. lol

Nah, been playing bass since I was 9. Guitar since I was about 12.

FWIW, I play pretty good fingerstyle as well, though I much prefer the tone of a pick, particularly with the Ric.

And anyone who says you shouldn't use open strings on a bass stopped learning new songs in the 80s.

The song I am playing in that picture incidentally is Freedom, by RATM. Try playing it without open notes. lol

So this dude voided the warranty on his bass... Anyone else do something crazy to a new bass like sand the back of the neck, install shielding or generally mod?

None of my basses have any warranty left. I ordered a custom bass and modded it within weeks, however.

SHAME.

Where is that guy who replaced the pickguard on his P bass with a jagged piece of sheet metal when you need him? lol
