For instance when playing Dust In The Wind on an acoustic guitar or when playing certain other songs on bass. Anytime it is convenient to grab a note on the E string with my thumb. 99% of the time though the pad of my thumb is the only thing in contact with the neck. You'll notice that in most of those pictures of Vic up there, only the pad of his thumb is in contact with the neck. I guarantee you that Geddy doesn't routinely, unnecessarily wrap his whole thumb around the neck either, much less his whole hand.
I am not preaching to anyone. I am quite sure most of you guys with poor technique absolutely smoke me on bass. I am also quite sure that you could help yourself out greatly by practicing the proper way to hold the bass ( in general usage). Not only is it safer for your tendons, but it dramatically increases reach. To each their own though and rest assured I certainly meant no disrespect to any of you.

Ah, the old attack on pick players thing. lol
Nah, been playing bass since I was 9. Guitar since I was about 12.
FWIW, I play pretty good fingerstyle as well, though I much prefer the tone of a pick, particularly with the Ric.
And anyone who says you shouldn't use open strings on a bass stopped learning new songs in the 80s.
The song I am playing in that picture incidentally is Freedom, by RATM. Try playing it without open notes. lol
