I want to buy an electric bass guitar that has the lush vintage sound.
Something that sounds like a stand-up.
Not interested in "punch", "twang", or spikey treble sound.
Just good old deep rich fat sound throughout.
In your opinion, what bass guitar would this be?
Vintage Ampeg fretless scroll bass.
Here you go then!
I would go for a Gibson EB-3 or SG bass (SG is a short scale), they have a real sixties sound and only lows, no hights anywhere!
Fretless J bass, and use the neck pickup and down strokes, using the side of the thumb near the end of the board, to mimic the sound of an upright.
Thanks all.....it doesn't have to perfectly mimic a standup..
It was just the direction I wanted to go in....
Something that sounds like the bass used on a lot of Gordon Lightfoot recordings...sort of....
Jaco Pastorius once said that playing a fretless neck, the strings tend to "eat" the neck.......
I assume he meant that the strings wear out the neck prematurely....is this true?
But if you want to mimic the upright, you would be better off with flats, which don't damage the board (as much).
The sound you seem to want would come from a Gibson hollobody EB2 bass, with flatwounds.
